With 320,000 acres of
wilderness - from mountain streams to alpine lakes, there's adventure
everywhere here! And with elevations in New Mexico ranging from 3,000
feet to 13,000 feet plus, small wonder that the state has such species
as deer, elk, quail, dove, pheasants and waterfowl. Less well-known
are pronghorn and javelina - and exotics such as oryx, Persian ibex
and Barbary sheep.
Another great thing, fishing in New Mexico is
the year-round season for most waters. Add the broad variety of
species from panfish to trout, bass and catfish, northern pike and
walleye, and you have one of the best places to fish in the nation.
And don't forget about the phenomenon of winter ice fishing in the
so-called desert Southwest.
And don't forget diving
the Blue Hole, where you can dive year-round in the clear blue waters
of a spring-fed well billed as "the scuba capital of the Southwest."
Then there's outdoor ice-skating and even bird-watching for the less
adventuresome.
